One person is dead after a head-on crash in Bay of Plenty this afternoon.
It's the first road death of the official holiday period.
The crash happened on State Highway Two at Whakamarama about 2.15pm.
Emergency services were still on the scene, and traffic was being diverted away from the crash site near Gill Lane.
Motorists in the area were being told to expect delays.
The holiday period began at 4pm on Christmas Eve and finishes at 6am on 5 January.
Last year seven people died in road crashes during the holiday period - one more than the record low the year before.
