A man was due in court today after a police chase which ended up in the sea in west Auckland yesterday.
Police said they spotted a man in Whenuapai after discovering a stolen car containing property from a recent burglary.
They said when they began to pursue him, he got in a rowboat and began heading for open water.
Police said he refused to come back to shore even when the boat started taking on water so one officer jumped into the sea and swam after him.
A local also offered his boat to two other officers who joined the chase.
The man was eventually arrested and was charged with burglary, unlawfully taking a vehicle, and theft.
