Police in Wairarapa are seeking information about a serious assault behind a Castlepoint pub on New Year's Eve.
They said a 20-year-old man staying at a temporary campsite behind the Whakataki Tavern was walking back to his tent after drinking with friends during the evening.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said he was attacked and suffered serious facial injuries that needed to be treated in hospital.
He said the man had earlier that evening had a run-in with another man.
Police were speaking with people who were staying at the campsite but also wanted to talk to anyone who was near the campsite on the night.
