Two tourists have been brutally attacked in Northland, with one left needing facial reconstructive surgery.
Police said the 22 and 23 year old American men were attacked outside the Bay Adventurer Backpackers on King's Road in Paihia about 3am on Saturday.
Both men spent the night in hospital, with one of them expected to undergo reconstructive surgery in the next few days.
Police said they did not believe a weapon was involved.
