A Scottish tourist has died following a car crash east of Hastings this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to the crash on Waimarama Road at about 4pm.

Police said the vehicle crossed the centre line while attempting to negotiate a bend, clipping a second vehicle before spinning off the road and crashing into a tree.

The driver of the car, a 68-year-old man visiting the country from Scotland, died at the scene.

His two female passengers suffered serious injuries, and have been taken to the Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
