Kayaker saved after capsize

A 38-year-old woman has been rescued after clinging to a buoy for about 40 minutes off the coast of Eastbourne near Wellington.

Police said the woman had fallen out of her kayak in strong winds and could not make the 100 metres distance back to shore yesterday afternoon.

She was wearing a life jacket and managed to make it to a buoy.

Police said the woman's daughter, who was with her, made it to shore and raised the alarm.

Maritime police responded and broadcast the emergency, leading to two members of the Muritai Yacht Club finding the woman.

She was suffering from mild hypothermia.
