It hoped to create an online catalogue of all the known artworks by the artist, who died in 1947.

The gallery's director, Rhana Devenport said a lot of her work was in archives in London and with the funding, they hoped to uncover some of her unknown work.

"It's a very important project to do for the status of Frances Hodgkins as a major artist within the history on New Zealand within the history of New Zealand art and clarifies the contribution of a singular artist."

"So she was working at a time of radical modernism and her work has had a huge influence on New Zealand artists and artistes beyond New Zealand shores."

Ms Devenport said a major exhibition and accompanying book on Frances Hodgkins was also scheduled for 2017.
