Train passengers stranded by Blenheim fire

5:45 am on 20 January 2015

Dozens of train passengers have had their travel plans disrupted by a fire north of Blenheim.

The fire started in Grovetown near the train line just after 9pm.

It was under control but delayed the Coastal Pacific passenger train from Picton.

Kiwirail said the 110 passengers on board would now spend the night in Blenheim.

They would be bussed to Christchurch tomorrow morning, although some needing to catch connecting flights had been put on a shuttle tonight.

One freight train had also been cancelled as a result of the fire.

Earlier today a scrub fire in Seddon had also disrupted the same train service.
