Auckland boaties reminded to be safe

6:48 am on 24 January 2015

Thousands of holidaymakers are expected to take to the water this Auckland Anniversary Weekend, prompting a reminder for boaties to be prepared before heading out.

Coastguard spokesperson for the northern region Georgie Smith said it has had more than 450 calls for help and over 22,000 trip reports since 24 December.

She said that was a good sign, as boaties did need to make sure to let people know where they were heading and when they expected to be back by.

People need to take the time to check the weather first and to ensure they have life jackets and at least two forms of waterproof communication on them, she said.
