More than 15,000 people were expected at the ASB Baypark Stadium for the event, which would see the country's best jet-boaters race around a specially dug track in less than a metre of water.

An organiser, Pip Minnell said it was the only jetsprinting event in the world to be held in a seated stadium.

Tomorrow the stadium would be used for the inaugural Jetsprint Cup, which would include racers from Australia, Canada and the United States.
