State Highway 1 at Templeton, just south of Christchurch, has reopened after a serious crash which closed the road about 11.30 this morning.
Police said a car, which crossed the centre line, hit an oncoming truck and collided with a van.
The driver of the car was in a serious condition in hospital, while the van driver was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
The police were appealing for any witnesses to the accident to come forward.
