German visitors involved in Matakana crash

The police say those involved in a crash that left a woman dead north of Auckland were all from Germany.

A passing motorist spotted the car with three people it, after it crashed into a tree stump on Leigh Road in Matakana shortly before 5pm yesterday.

The 19-year-old driver, who had been living in New Zealand since July, was critically injured.

Her parents were the two passengers, and were visiting her from Germany.

Her mother died at the scene and her father was in a stable condition in hospital.

The police said the type of licence the driver held would form part of the investigation, which would take several weeks.

They said they appreciated there was often significant public interest in crashes involving foreign drivers, but they needed to let the inquiry run its course.
