The collapse, at a Te Atatu home last September, left five people needing hospital treatment.

It was later found the deck had been fixed to the house with nails, rather than being bolted on as required by the Building Code.

The landlord Mark Tresham pleaded guilty and was sentenced at the Waitakere District Court on Friday for constructing a deck that was unsafe and without building consent.

General manager of Auckland Council Building Control Ian McCormick said safety should be the highest priority and regulations are for protection.
