Police in Hamilton say it is too early to say what provoked the fatal shooting of a man in the city last night.
Michael James Thompson, who was 29, died in hospital after being shot at close range outside a property in the suburb of Melville.
Detective Sergeant Nick O'Brien said the shooting followed an altercation involving several men.
He said while the homicide inquiry was still in its very early stages the police were following positive lines of inquiry to find who was responsible for the shooting.
Mr O'Brien said there was nothing to suggest that people living in the area were facing any danger.
