Wellington anti-amalgamation group forms

4:26 pm on 27 February 2015

A group of Wellingtonians has formed a group resisting the amalgamation of Wellington's councils.

The group, calling itself Best Little Capital, said the pro-amalgamation campaign seemed to be carefully orchestrated and largely ratepayer funded.

A spokesperson, Michael Moughan, said the case for amalgamation was a lazy solution to the region's problems.

"We believe that there are certain things that are better done at a regional level of co-coperation but that the answer isn't to go all out and amalgamate everything and in the process completely do away with with local democracy."

Mr Moughan said there needed to be more regional co-operation in areas where there was a high degree of automation such as IT and water services.
