A 32-year-old man who was visiting Hamilton from overseas has died after falling down a steep bank onto Hillsborough Terrace.

The man was found on the road just after 1am after a passing driver called an ambulance.

He had a head injury and was unconscious. Attempts to revive him failed and he died at the scene.

Police investigating the death said they were keeping an open mind and were not ruling out any possibilities at this stage.

They said a post-mortem would be carried out and a scene examination was underway.

They wanted to speak to a man and woman, believed to be Asian, seen embracing above where the body was found, as they may have seen the man shortly before his death.

Police said the man, who was in New Zealand for business, fell down a steep bank over a five metre retaining wall.

His death has been passed onto the coroner.
