A study into perceptions about carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) has found people have mixed feelings about its potential introduction in Taranaki.

CCS is a method of mitigating climate change by capturing carbon emissions and storing them in deep underground reservoirs.
Taranaki has been earmarked for CCS because of its skilled workforce and the availability of reservoirs.
The study leader, Fiona Coyle of GNS Science, said people were worried about Taranaki becoming a dumping ground, but also wanted to take responsibility for the region's emissions.
Other concerns included the triggering of earthquakes and groundwater contamination.
The oil and gas industry told researchers there was no business case for CCS.
