A family member of a woman stabbed eight times in a Te Anau bar says the unprovoked attack has shocked the community.

Police said the woman was attacked in the toilets of the Moose Bar in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A family member Chrissy Signal said the woman was in the Intensive Care Unit at Southland Hospital, with a collapsed lung, but would make a full recovery.

She said a pair of scissors was used in the stabbing.

The woman charged with attacking her was due to appear in the Invercargill District Court today.

Ms Signal said the women did not know each other.

A spokesperson for the bar refused to comment.
