The car crashed into the truck at a roundabout in Pukekohe just before midday.

Police said they started following the car in Tuakau because they thought the occupants were involved in a burglary.

Sergeant Noel Foster said the 11-year-old started speeding back to his home address after he saw police following him.

"The police officers that were following him did not get closer than probably 300 metres," he said.

"We had other police from Pukekohe heading to try to intercept the vehicle. They also observed it go past at speed. They were unable to signal the vehicle to stop, or to spike it."

No-one was injured in the crash and the boy has been referred to Youth Aid.
