An annual traffic report published by the company TomTom showed gridlock in Auckland was slightly worse than New York City, but better than Sydney.

Auckland ranked as the 41st most congested city last year out of the more than 200 surveyed around the world.

The index also covered Wellington and Christchurch, which had also seen rising congestion levels.

Wellington was the third most congested city in Australasia, while Christchurch ranked sixth after Perth.

Wellingtonians wasted about 11 and a half working days in traffic, while Cantabrians lost a little under 10 working days.
