A mental health patient is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital after being hit by two different vehicles on a public road.
Police said the man, who is in his twenties, was hit by the vehicles at about 1pm today near Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua.
The Capital & Coast District Health Board has confirmed the man is a mental health patient in a non-secure unit at Kenepuru Hospital.
The board said the man was free to come and go from the hospital when he pleased.
