The man, described as Maori and in his late 40s, was found at the St Mary's Catholic School and Preschool, in Avondale, yesterday morning.

Police are describing the death as unexplained. Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman said the man looked like he had some injuries, but would not say what they were.

He said they thought they knew his identity but were still waiting for that to be confirmed. A post mortem is due to be held today.

A caretaker at the church next door, Maka Halatoa, was the second person at the scene yesterday and said the man was lying on his back on the ground near school buildings.

He said parishoners were shocked at what had happened, with some in tears as the discovery was explained at yesterday afternoon's church service.
