Police officer assaulted in Auckland

7:00 pm on 7 April 2015

A police officer is likely to be off work for several days after what's being labelled a "gutless assault".

Police say the officer from West Auckland was punched and knocked unconscious while trying to arrest a man for driving with a suspended licence.

He was struck as he was trying to handcuff the driver at 11.30am.

The officer was taken to Waitakere Hospital with possible concussion, and injuries to his face and lower back.

The driver will appear in the Waitakere District Court tomorrow charged with aggravated wounding.
