Police in the Bay of Plenty are investigating an incident in which some children were found playing with explosives.

The police say the children were found in a Rotorua suburb, playing with a stick of Power Gel.

The explosive is typically used in construction and quarry work.

A passerby took the explosives from the children before handing them to police.

Police say the stick is at least 10-years-old and was unlikely to have caused any harm to the children.

However, police are concerned about how the children obtained the explosive and whether they had access to other dangerous items.
