A tramper who spent the night stranded on rocks at Auckland's Piha beach has been winched to safety by a helicopter.
He has been taken to the Surf Rescue base at Piha.
Piha Surf Rescue staff had tried to reach the 23-year-old man last night after he was reported trapped by the high tide, but were thwarted by rough water.
The high-powered lighting of a police helicopter was instead used to guide the 23-year-old to a higher and safer position on the rocks.
Police remained in cellphone contact with the man through the night.
He had warm clothes and a sleeping bag.
