Police said they were called out at about 6.45am after a train driver reported seeing a person lying next to the rail lines in Orakei.

They said he heard a noise and found blood on the train when he reached the station - calling in emergency services who found the body.

The eastern line was temporarily closed from Britomart to Panmure until about 11am.
