A Rotorua financial advisor has been convicted of stealing more than $1 million from her elderly clients.

Linnet Lewis admitted 16 charges of theft by a person in a special relationship when she appeared in the Rotorua District Court today.

Ms Lewis stole money from clients who thought she was managing their financial affairs between 2005 and 2011.

The Serious Fraud Office said Ms Lewis acted as an agent for these clients, gaining complete control of their assets before using that control to steal from them.

It said Ms Lewis committed a serious breach of trust against her clients, many of whom were elderly and vulnerable and could not manage their own affairs.

Ms Lewis will be sentenced next month.
