Quake rattles lower South Island

A magnitude 5 earthquake has given some residents in and around Queenstown an early morning shake.

The earthquake at 4.23am was centred under the sea, 50 kilometres off the coast of the Milford Sound.

It was at a depth of 11 kilometres.

Most of those who reported feeling the quake on the Geonet website said it was a light shake. There have been no reports of damage.
