Designed by architect Patrick Clifford, the $675 million tower at One Mills Lane in central Auckland will be 30 storeys high - just taller than the Vero building.

It will have a 125-room hotel, 10 retail spaces and office space for 4000 workers,

A director of the property development company Mansons TCLM, Culum Manson, said construction on the site currently occupied by the New Zealand Herald should start in the second quarter of 2016.

"The plan is to start demolition of the old Herald buildings at the end of the year, when the Herald vacate," he said.

"We're working with the city right now on our resource consent. We're in discussions with Auckland City Council and the Urban Design Panel as well and we're looking to get the consent through this year before we commence demolition."

Mr Manson said not only would the tower be the tallest, it would also offer the most floor space, making it appealing to larger tenants.
