A passer-by spotted smoke and flames at Rotorua Girls' High School and raised the alarm about 1.20am.

Police said they were aware of posts on social media and were investigating them. It was too early to tell what caused the fire and the scene examination was continuing, they said.

Two classrooms at the Hillcrest school were already well alight when fire crews arrived, and have been severely damaged.

Rotorua regional fire commander Graeme Fuller said firefighters removed iron roofing to establish a firebreak as the blaze swept through the ceiling cavity below.

He said their actions probably saved other classrooms in the same block, though they had smoke and water damage.

The school opened as usual today.
