Sisters describe impact of port death on family

6:19 pm on 27 May 2015

The sisters of a man who died while working at Wellington's port cried today as they told a Court about the impact his death has had on their family.

They were making Victim Impact Statements in the Wellington District Court where Centreport is being sentenced, having earlier been found guilty of a health and safety charge.

Mark Samoa was crushed in January 2013 when two stacks of pulp bales were pushed together by a forklift, driven by one of his colleagues.

One of his sisters, whose partner also works at the port company, told the Court today Mr Samoa's death had caused a dark cloud over the whole workplace, which took some time to clear.

The Crown has sought a substantial fine, saying the company has still not accepted culpability for Mr Samoa's death.
