Up to 40 firefighters attended the blaze at Four Kauri Family Medical Centre on New North Road at about 7.30am today.

Specialist fire investigator Russell Dickson said the fire was accidentally caused by an old air conditioning unit which probably overheated.

He said the reception area had been completely gutted and the rest of the building is heavily smoke-stained, although the doctors' offices escaped smoke damage as their doors were closed.

Mr Dickson said the centre would need to be totally refurbished.

The medical centre in central Auckland is now contained.
