5:27 pm on 2 June 2015

A coroner has revealed an Auckland man fatally stabbed by a stanger was intoxicated at the time.

Coroner Sarn Herdson's report said David Cunningham had walked about five kilometres from his parents' house to a Ramarama property in August 2012, where he approached a sleepout.

The man inside, who had heard footsteps, armed himself with a knife.

They ended up in a scuffle. Mr Cunningham was stabbed several times and died at the scene.

The police did not prosecute the man, saying he acted in self defence.

The report said Mr Cunningham would have been twice the legal limit if he had been driving.

The coroner did not make any recommendations.
