Failure to make it click 'disappointing'

Southern District police say growing numbers of people are failing to wear their seat belts, putting their lives at risk.

Officers in the region issued more than 5,300 offence notices last year for people not wearing safety belts, the highest number since 2010.

Seven people who were not wearing seatbelts died in road accidents in 2014.

Southern District Road Policing Manager Acting Inspector Tania Baron said the figures were disappointing, since wearing a seatbelt was the easiest way to prevent injury and death in a crash.
