The emergency status has been in place since 4pm on Saturday 20 June, when a massive dump of rain caused widespread flooding.

Whanganui Mayor Annette Main lifted the state of emergency at noon today.

She said the district was now fully in the recovery phase, and while those worst affected still needed support, the region was beginning to get back to a business-as-usual footing.

However, she said there was much work ahead to deal with the enormous impact of the floods on the region's infrastructure and services.
