Bruce Mortimer, 46, died last night from head injuries sustained in the attack at the city's Franklyn Village apartment complex.

The owner of the large boarding house in Nelson, where the attack occurred, said people living there were in shock over the incident.

Liz Harris has owned the Franklyn Village complex since 2009.

She said it had security including cameras, and staff and other residents were stunned by the violent incident that led to a loss of life.

"Staff do a really good job, they have a good relationships with the people here and it really is a very homely community, and we're all very shocked and very disappointed this has happened, and it impacts on everybody here, it's like this has happened in their home."

The boarding house has about 180 rooms.

Nelson police investigating the attack have arrested two men who are now in custody and will appear in court tomorrow on assault charges.

Police said their investigation is now a homicide inquiry, and further charges are likely.
