Murder accused remanded to High Court

A 27 year-old Nelson man charged with murder following the death of a man at the weekend has been remanded in custody to appear in the High Court later this month.

Joseph Ronayne Dempsey was initially charged with assault with intent to injure following an incident at Nelson's Franklyn Village boarding house in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victim, Bruce Andrew Mortimer later died of his injuries.

Mr Dempsey was yesterday charged with murder, and appeared today in the Nelson District Court where he was remanded on both charges to the High Court on 27 July.

A 17 year-old jointly charged in relation to the incident has been remanded in the custody of Child Youth and Family, to also appear in the High Court later on 27 July.

The teenager, whose name remains suppressed, appeared in the Nelson District Court today alongside his co-accused Joseph Dempsey.
