Crack down on Akl freedom campers

9:40 am on 12 July 2015

The Auckland Council is cracking down on freedom campers staying near the city's waterfront.

The Council and Auckland Transport were concerned about how freedom camping was disrupting the public at Wynard Quarter

The council said its staff were frequently speaking to campers about the parking restrictions and suggesting alternative campsites.

General Manager of Licensing & Compliance Services Grant Barnes said the council was focusing only on campers who are passing through.

Mr Barnes said the council was looking to enforce parking fines and bylaw infringement notices when campers fail to move.
