Human remains have been found in the rubble of a shed fire on the West Coast overnight.
The fire was reported about 3am at Karangarua near Franz Josef, in Westland.
A police spokesperson said a vehicle was located outside the shed raising concerns that there may be someone inside the building.
A scene examination was under way and investigators were working to establish the cause of the fire and to identify the deceased person.
A post mortem examination will establish the cause of death.
