A serious crash during a police pursuit closed State Highway 3 north of Te Kuiti for much of the night.
Police say the crash, near the Gadsby Road corner, happened just before midnight after a pursuit of less than a minute.
They said the speeding car being chased collided with a truck in the opposite lane.
The driver of the car sustained serious injuries in the crash.
The highway was reopened early this morning.
