Police in Christchurch are urging people to be vigilant, as opportunistic thieves are stealing work vehicles, utes and tools.
Senior Constable Lyle Prior said over the past few weeks there had been an increase in the number of stolen cars in the Riccarton area, with most being taken from the side of the road.
Mr Prior said 15 percent of the thefts were from private driveways. He suggested people should install car alarms and keep an eye on their property.
