Police warning after council impersonator theft

5:05 pm on 6 August 2015

Police are warning the public after a man posing as a council worker stole an elderly woman's wallet from her home in west Auckland.

They said the man, who is in his 40s and wearing a hi-visibility jacket, turned up at the woman's house in Glen Eden last Friday and asked to check her water pressure.

Shortly after he left, the woman received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer, who told her he had caught someone who had stolen her wallet.

The man asked for the woman's PIN so he could close her bank accounts, but she refused to give it to him.

She then discovered her wallet had indeed been stolen.

Police called the trick "downright rotten".
