Police began a search at 4pm yesterday for Kyle Mcgillivray who had failed to return from taking his grandmother's dog for a walk.

The dog was spotted, but was on its own. Up to 30 searchers at a time, made up of police, search and rescue staff, volunteers and locals continued the looking for the young boy until the early hours of this morning.

Senior Constable Allan Spooner said the young boy was found shortly after 9am today.

"Kyle was located approximately five kilometers south of Marton township, near the main trainline where it intercepts south with Makirikiri Road.

"He was cold and wet but otherwise in good condition for a young chap who has been out overnight."

The 10 year old has been taken to Wanganui Hospital with his family to be assessed and is expected to be discharged today.
