The Fire Service said the house in the suburb of Ilam was well ablaze when firefighters arrived just after 1.30pm.

It said it took almost half an hour to bring the fire under control.

One fire truck remains at the scene.

Earlier, in the eastern Bay of Plenty, one person was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in a house in Opotiki.

Fire crews were called to the house about 12.30pm today.
