Tourists involved in fatal Southland crash

7:49 pm on 28 August 2015

A fatal crash in Southland today appears to have been caused by a tourist driver who failed to stop at a stop sign, police say.

Pradeep Edirisinghe, 44, died at the scene of the two-car crash at the intersection of Riversdale Waikaia Road and Two Chain Road about 9.30am.

Two Italian tourists, both in their early 20s, were flown to Dunedin Hospital.

A woman has serious injuries and a man has moderate injuries.

The police said their initial investigation showed the couple, who were driving a van, failed to stop at the controlled intersection and hit Mr Edirisinghe's car.
