A man attacked by intruders who burst into his Matamata home early this morning was found bleeding heavily from facial wounds.

The victim suffered head injuries in the attack and is now in Waikato Hospital.

Police said intruders broke into his house in Sylvan Place this morning and assaulted him.

The attackers have not yet been found.

Senior Sergeant Andrew Townsend said police were called shortly before 2am today.

"A witness at the address told police he saw a car pull up the drive of the property and a number of people get out and then heard the sound of breaking glass and the male occupant of the house yelling.

"Going to investigate, the witness found the victim in the kitchen bleeding heavily from facial wounds and that the offenders had fled."

Mr Townsend said while there had been reports of a firearm, no shots were fired and no firearm was recovered.

Mr Townsend said the property was secured overnight and a scene examination is set to commence this morning.

Police are appealing to anyone with any information on this morning's attack to contact Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Pitkethley of the Eastern Waikato CIB on (07) 858 6200.
