It may look that way, but this is a work of art and not just that but a piece of public art, an art installation in fact.

The idea came from ChildFund New Zealand's Christmas Tree of Bikes on Auckland's Queens Wharf in December.

The Rotorua Lakes Council rode with the idea and secured the use of the 7m high galvanised steel framework.

It holds 150 bikes of all shapes and sizes and is on Rotorua's Village Green.

A council spokesperson said it was hoped the Bike Tree would reinforce the city's growing reputation as the Southern Hemisphere's mountain biking capital.

The bikes were donated by people from throughout Rotorua.

The Bike Tree is currently it is being lit with blue light at night as part of the prostate awareness campaign.
