Two weeks after the decomposed body of a man was found in a Porirua home, the police are no closer to knowing how he died.

They say the man's body could have been lying at the home, where a couple in their late 50s lived, for as long as three weeks.

Police were called to the house at the end of August after neighbours noticed an unpleasant smell, where they found the body.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson said police had a fair idea of who the man was, but further DNA testing was needed to confirm his identity.

He said that could take up to two months, and establishing a cause of death could take even longer.

Mr Ferguson said a post mortem had not been able to conclude how the man died because his body was so badly decomposed.
