A small group of experienced skiers has had to be evacuated off Mt Ruapehu after a blizzard made it too difficult to ski down.

About 30 club skiers asked Ruapehu Alpine Lifts to help them get from their cabins on the mountain and back to their cars.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts executive manager commercial Simon Dickson said this happened a few times a year.

"We've done a run around the clubs and picked up people who would like a lift down and we've dropped them at their cars and they're now able to drive down the Whakapapa mountain road," Mr Dickson said.

"There's nobody at Turoa because the road is closed, so there's nobody currently stuck or stranded on the mountain."

Some people were waiting out the storm in their cabins so they could ski on the fresh snow later in the week, he said.
