A 22-year-old man has died after slipping on ice while back-country skiing near Wanaka this afternoon.

Police and Alpine Cliff Rescue were called to the accident near the Treble Cone ski field just after 1pm, but the man was not found until an hour later.
Treble Cone said the man had been been skiing outside of its facilities when he fell.
The ski field closed a week-and-a-half ago.
The death has been referred to the coroner, and police are working to advise family members of the death.
